Villefranche-sur-Mer from the hilltop overlooking the city.
Greetings from beautiful Villefranche-sur-Mer and the lovely South of France.
Our new patio 😜😎Villefranche-Sur-Mer from our patio.Village of Villefranche-Sur-Mer from patio view. Our friends Jim and Jill joined us.We enjoyed fine dining and vino in France ✔️😜🇫🇷🍷😉Nice Harbor from Castle Hill in Nice.
We took several trips, with only one using the trusty Peugeot as the traffic and roads here are terrible. We used regional trains, buses and the tram to move around. Nice has a wonderful mass transit system.
Walking tour, Nice.
Garibaldi Square, Nice.
Nice promenade from Castle Hill.View overlooking the harbor of Nice from the road to Villefranche-Sur-Mer.Of course we tried the local food, Socca is the regional specialty. It’s made from chickpea flour.Socca in action 😜Ok, road trip time, in the trusty Peugeot. First stop, St. Paul-de-Vence.Beautiful, St. Paul- de-Vence😎👊View from the top of the walled city.Of course we continued our relentless search for the perfect loaf of bread. 🤔Next up, Vence, just a few km down the road. It’s Sunday, the small village is packed with locals. Lots of fun.The Hotel de Ville of Vence, city hall!Ok, last stop today, Tourette’s-Sur-Loup. A very small village, but beautiful.Wow!Beautiful and so quiet. What more could you ask for?Sunrise in Villefranche!Ok, next up, Menton, and the big daddy, Monaco! This is Monte Carlo from the top.Menton, France, it’s right next to Italy. We walked into Italy on the Promenade.Beautiful view. Look, it’s stairs. I’m lucky Jill’s here to walk with tour guide Cindy 😉Ok, the granddaddy of $$$$ Monaco and the famous city of Monte Carlo. The Monte Carlo Casino.2023 Lamborghini SUV. All the latest models of cars are parked around the Casino, it’s fabulous people watching. The other highlight is the yacht harbor. Billions and Billions of dollars of yachts. Unbelievable the amount of money here.We also took the train to Antibes again, but a bad wind storm chased us out.Wonderful time here in France, nine weeks in total. We are headed to Italy tomorrow and Jim and Jill are going to Egypt.
Greetings from beautiful, but a little chilly, Antibes and the South of France.
Tour guide Cindy has been keeping us busy with trips in the area and walking the beautiful city of Antibes. Let’s recap what we’ve seen.
Roadside view, route of Napoleon over the alps when returning to Paris after his exile.Beautiful views as we climb 4000 ft.
We are not fond of driving in the French Rivera, the area is very hilly and the roads very narrow and crowded. Cars are parked wherever they can, and the French drive like maniacs, not a good combination.
So, when we decided to take the famous “Route of Napoleon” from Antibes to Castellane in the Alps we decided to do it on Sunday morning, the lightest traffic day of the week, by far.
Napoleon returned from exile, and returned, and returned to Nice hoping to be welcomed but, he was turned out. So he and his army of 1,200 set out to climb the Alps in six days. Quite a feet.
The Route of Napoleon is now a hiking, biking, motorcycle riding, and outdoors retreat for the French. Beautiful scenery and very rugged mountains.
Castellane where the route crests in the Alps.
Castellane is very quiet in the winter, especially with no snow👍
We had heard of a famous Rotisserie family in the area, so we stopped by on the return trip home. Delicious chicken, stuffed with rosemary and garlic, marinated in Olive oil with fingerling potatoes, delicious.Mega yachts in Antibes.
Monday and Tuesday we had a storm pass through the area, high winds and some rain. In the south of France, that means full subzero clothing. Hats, gloves and definitely scarfs😜
French Rivera with fresh snow on the Alps
Being from the PNW, a little weather never stops us, 25,000 steps daily 👊
Rainbow over Antibes.Fort Carre, AntibesOf course you must visit the lovely French bakery every day👍✔️😜🇫🇷Wednesday we took the bus to the world famous destination, Cannes.
Above is the world famous Cannes film festival sight. It’s right on the water and used for many purposes. But, it’s home to the rich and famous one week a year.
Beautiful harbor and historic area, unbelievable amount of yachts, billions of dollars worth.Cannes from the top of the hill, very beautiful.Downtown Cannes, very upscale. The world famous beach clubs of Cannes.
As we said earlier, a big storm passed threw a few days ago, so the beach clubs were busy cleaning up.
For fun Cindy and I love to look at menus in fancy restaurants. Just FYI, a burger, fries and a beer at the beach club in Cannes €90.
Coiffure (beauty shop) in Cannes.
Cannes is very, very upscale. Every brand in the world has a shop here. It’s France and fashion is huge.
We saw this sign in one of hundreds of Coiffure shops. Poor Kim Kardashian, her setup is the cheapest.
Back to Antibes for another day with a short driving tour around the Cap d’ Antibes and the Thursday market. I’m sure at least 15,000 steps also.Bocce ball is life in the south of France.
We’re moving tomorrow about an hour east to Villefranche-Sur-Mer, outside of Nice. Our friends Jim and Jill from Portland are joining us for a week.
View from our new condo’s patio on the Mediterranean😜
Greetings from beautiful Antibes, France and the beautiful Mediterranean sea! We had a quick 2 1/2 hour, and not too expensive (€20 tolls), drive from Menerbes to Antibes.
Where is Antibes your asking? It’s part of the French Rivera! It’s a busy, busy place in the summer and home to some very rich folks. We thought we’d visit and see how the 1% vacation.Antibes has a long history, Greeks, Romans, wars, plagues, dark ages, church and Napoleon were all involved here. Now it’s a vacation and lifestyle Mecca. Old town Antibes with the snow covered Alps in the back.We are staying in a VRBO owned by an Irish couple. It’s very nice and we can see the water and promenade. Great people watching!Water aerobics in the Mediterranean? Sure why not!Sunrise from our patio 👍Fantastic bakery four doors down. We must still be in France! I know we’re in the Rivera because it cost twice as much as I usually pay for a baguette. It’s very expensive here😎Antibes has a market, Marche Provençale. Let’s walk the Promenade to it. Old town Antibes.Old town.Beautiful old city, lots and lots of Europeans retire here or live here part time. I can see why!Entrance to the market, it’s not the most spectacular market. Most of the folks here go out to eat. Fantastic restaurant scene here. This guy makes socca, a chickpea pancake, very popular here.
Your on the Mediterranean, you need some oysters.
It’s Saturday, but not too busy. It’s early, 9:30 AM, (your in France). The Boucherie (butcher) is packed Cheese, you must! Your in France, ok!Quite a spice selection, you have lots of Italians here. Italy is only a few miles away!French love walnuts!
We are here for a week, loving the Promenade. It’s flat right and right on the water and No Cobblestones!
You know it’s Saturday in France, when the bike riders are out in force. This is from our balcony!
Greetings from beautiful, and warm, Ménerbes, France and the Luberon.
Above is a Calgary, a point of prayer. You see these throughout the region. They are locations for prayer for the areas residents and their livelihood, families, agriculture etc…
Tour guide Cindy has been keeping us busy with day trips around the area. One of the things that makes the Luberon so beautiful is the diverse terrain in a small area. From staggeringly beautiful rock formations to green valley floors, the Luberon has it all in a small space.Beautiful!
Ok, let’s get going on some tours, lead away tour guide Cindy!
First up, Les Baux de Provence. This medieval village has been particularly restored as an example of life in the Luberon in medieval times. This is the Chateau of Les Baux de Provence. The village from the top, a smaller village used to sit here. The winds here are called “Mistral Winds”, and they can blow long and hard. The valley below.A drawing of what the village looked like back in the day.The village of Eygalieres on the way home.Aix-en-Provence
Ok, up bright and early and a short drive (1 1/4 hours and €4.5 tolls) to Aix-en-Provence. The cultural center of Provence😜
Street flea market day.Produce and locally made goods in the city center.Aix as it’s called is a lovely city with very beautiful sights.Hotel de Ville (city hall).Cathedral Aix-en-Provence, huge and beautiful inside. And of course, the never ending pursuit of the perfect loaf of bread 😜Tasty , 8.4. Not Cindy, the bread 🤭Ok, next day after a safe trip home, the world famous Cotes du Rhône Wine Road. This is the village of La Fare. The Cotes du Rhône trail is very beautiful with staggeringly beautiful scenery and very narrow and winding roads. Yes, we also wined a few times🍷Next up, beautiful Crestet.Village entrance, note the cobblestones. Gosh, look, more stairs and cobblestones. Let’s climb up😜The view from the top. It’s worth the effort.🙏🏻Wow, the smoke is from the grape plant trimmings. They prune the vines here in December and January and burn the trimmings. The valley smells fantastic.Quick stop at Gigondas. These villages are basically closed but, in the spring, summer and fall they’re packed with tourists. Now, it’s just Cindy and I.Beautiful, Notre Dame d’ Aubune chapel on the trip home.Spring comes early in The Luberon.
That’s it for us in this beautiful area. Leaving tomorrow for Antibes on the French Rivera. It’s a four hour drive or so. Hopefully, you enjoyed this area as much as we did. It’s what we always dreamed of when we thought of France.
Greetings from beautiful, but a bit breezy and rainy, Luberon region and Menerbes France.
Tour guide Cindy has kept us busy with short day trips throughout the Luberon area. Let’s recap what we saw. Again, everything is close by and every place has a castle, fortress, or chateau. Amazingly beautiful place.
Roman bridge in Vaison-la-Romaine.
Built in 100 AD by the Romans, this bridge with very little structural change is still in daily use by autos and trucks 🤔
This marble plaque is in remembrance of the men who died in WW1. Every town remembers the young men who sacrificed their lives for France. 🙏🏻City entrance. Look, cobblestones. 😜Chateau Vaison La Romaine. The forts in this area are called chateaus.
Vaison-la-Romaine clock tower.
Ok, let’s move down the road a few miles to Lacoste.City entrance, look more cobblestones! 😜Chateau LacosteView from the top of Lacoste. The Luberon is so beautiful.Side note, this is a Borie. They are stone huts you see throughout the Luberon and were built and used by sheepherders and farmers as temporary shelters.Saturday market in Apt. It’s January and the markets still go on every Saturday!Ok, next day on to St. Saturnin Les Apt.Let’s climb the hill to the beautiful chateau overlooking the village and valley. Fantastic, more cobblestones!Built around 1000 AD, the chateau is in disrepair, but the views are spectacular!😎Imagine this Chateau over 1000 years ago as the center of village life. The chateau’s church has been maintained and is still used for special occasions.🙏🏻Breathtaking views!View from the top. Note the reservoir built in the 1800’s for the valleys water supply.Staggeringly beautiful. One last stop, Joucas. We ate our picnic lunch in the fields just outside of Joucas👍Ok, don’t want you to think all we do is tour, we did somehow find time to refill our wine bottle. Don’t know how it was empty so fast? And of course, our daily bakery adventure/exploration.And I know you wanted to see the latest picture of Teddy, who’s trying to crawl !
Au revoir for now. Five more days in the Luberon with a trip to Aix-en-Provence. 👍
Greetings from beautiful Menerbes, France. This is the village of Menerbes from the valley below. The field is lavender in winter sleep.
We’ve been quite busy with short trips around the Côte d’Azur region and had a small rain storm pass through. Let’s recap!
First things first! We found the local Coop and did a little wine tasting.Found our favorite, and filled the trusty 3 liter bottle from Italy €7.50 😎About a half hour trip, “The Crag’s”, a world famous rock climbing area. Note the folks who climbed into the cave.Prehistoric man lived in this area.Fort de Buoux, ancient Roman gateway to the Côte d’Azur.Down the road, Lourmarin. This village is famous as a home for painters.Again, staggeringly beautiful.Of course, it has castle. Village of Cucuron.Village of Ansouis. Cindy and I have talked dozens of time about the fact that every 6-10 miles is a castle. They were at constant war with their neighbors or religious wars. It’s amazing anyone lived.Bonnieux from below the village, as the fog is lifting.Entering Bonnieux.View from the top of Bonnieux, that’s our village Menerbes, across the valley.Ok, bright and early the next day, one hour trip to Orange and the famous Roman Theatre Antique d’Orange. Lavender fields at rest.Built by the Romans shortly after the completion of the Roman Colosseum. The Theatre of Orange is quite the show.Able to hold 10,000 people, the entire population at that time in the region, it was used for plays and theater. It held a few shows like The Roman Colosseum, but was designed for plays, not battle re-enactments.It’s had many, many lives, as all the Roman theaters have. Napoleon started reconstruction, and it continues to this day. Very interesting! This is an artist’s drawing of what Orange looked like in 200AD with both the Theater and a Temple located next to it.Orange is a lovely small city.It was market day when we visited. We did a little shopping.
Bonjour from the beautiful Luberon region in France. This picture is from the village of Menerbes, our current home.Menerbes is a very photogenic village. With no tourists in the village, we just wander and take pic’s.😎Beautiful!
We rested up over the weekend and today, Monday, tour guide Cindy was ready for a quick tour around the Luberon area.
The Luberon is a very old region as far as development. It was the first Roman Province, which dates from around 300 BC.
Above is in Oppede, which had a fortress guarding the marble quarry in the area.
Monument to marble cutters in the area.Gordes, unbelievably beautiful!Another view of Gordes. The castle of Gordes. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot to see in some of these villages. They’re mainly high end hotels now.Gordes from below. The Luberon area loves to build with stone. Homes, castles and walls made from hand laid stones. The scenery is very rocky and craggy. But, in places you start to see the beginnings of Tuscany.Ok, quick drive to Roussillon, famous for the soil which is an ochre used in paints and dyes. That’s why their buildings are orange in color. Ochre mines.Unusual area, geographically wise.Cute town, we were here in the spring of 2019. These villages get packed full of the tour bus crowds. Now, there empty.Notice the color of everything, Ochre.Panorama shot from the topNote the home built into the stone.
Beautiful area and very, very quiet. Road trip tomorrow to Aix-en-Provence, and a visit to the wine Coop.✔️👍😜🍷
Greetings and Happy New Year from beautiful Menerbes, France.Yes, we have moved about 100km to Menerbes from Uzes. Kate is in Madrid before flying home, so it’s back to Tour guide Cindy and I. Menerbes is a very small hilltop village in the Luberon region of France. This is the lavender area of France. No lavender now, it’s winter, and not many tourists either. This is the entrance of our new Airbnb. It’s freshly remodeled and very comfortable. The view from our Airbnb, it’s quite beautiful.Sunrise in the Luberon.Menerbes is very small. It’s quite the tourist destination in the spring, summer and fall. Most of the village has been renovated, a few places are still in the original condition and waiting for you to sink a million into a renovation. 😜Let’s walk around the hillside village. View from the hilltop. The citadel and jail from the walled cityVillage bell tower and the Hotel de Ville (city hall). In front of the church, overlooking the valley Beautiful streets, yes they drive cars through here.Of course, we found the local Boulangerie. Not as fantastic as my buddies in Uzes, but still a sold B.The jail from the 1500’s. I wonder what the ACLU would say about that?😳Top of the hill overlooking the village.Driving to our Airbnb was quite fun.Two weeks here, with lots of side trips. ✔️👍😜View from our covered patio.
Au revoir and Bonne Annee! That’s goodbye and Happy New Year in French.👍
Bonjour from beautiful and slightly chilly (58 degrees) Uzes, France.Cindy and Kate wanted to take a short (4 1/2 hour) drive to Barcelona for a few days of adventure. I’ve been to Barcelona before and was a little overwhelmed by the crowds, so I stayed in Uzes and practiced my old French guy people watching 😜Barcelona has really strict car emissions rules, as well as restrictions of non-Spanish licensed vehicles, so they parked the trusty Peugeot in a suburb of Barcelona and took the Metro into their hotel. They stayed in the heart of the city. The star of the Barcelona landscape is La Sagrada Familia.Started in the late 1800’s by the world famous Antoni Gaudi, the amazing cathedral has led a very busy past. Hopefully, the cathedral will be completed in the late 2030’s.While not completed, the cathedral is quite staggeringly beautiful.Believe me, at €26 ticket (which includes an audio tour), we more than helped.Pictures don’t do it justice, it’s truly staggeringly beautiful.Ok, walking tour time, first up the Spanish Arc d’Triomf.Parc de la Ciutadella One of the streets in the Gothic Quarter. Barcelona is the center of the Catalonia region of Spain. They would like to succeed from Spain. Catedral de BarcelonaWalking tours need fuel, Spanish tapas and Sangrias for lunch.Barcelona has several central markets. This one is Mercat Santa Caterina in the El Born District. Notice the spelling of the market, Mercat is Catalonian.Beautiful What’s a Spanish market without a packed Tapas bar or five or six?😜Night views of La Sagrada Familia.
Ok, that’s enough for today. The ladies report 30,000 steps. Really sorry I missed that!😜
Up bright and early. You can’t be in Spain without Churros and hot chocolate sauce!Ok, fueled up and ready to pound the payment! 👍Casa Batilo, another structure designed by Antoni Gaudi.Okay, time for another market. This one is Mercat de La Boqueria, just off the Las Rambla. This is more of a prepared foods market. It’s very, very popular and very, very busy.Like a sandwich roll up.Look at the pride in his face. Now that’s an egg display.Beautiful city. This is Plaza Reial.Statue of Christopher Columbus, not torn down 🤔Placa de EspanaBarcelona is a beautiful city. Cindy says the crowds weren’t as bad this time of year. Barcelona is notorious for pickpockets. They weren’t hit, but did witness a purse snatcher chased down from a coffee shop.30,000 steps two days in a row, sorry I missed that.
Cindy is back in Uzes, Kate has one more day in Barcelona then a train to Madrid for a couple days then home.
We’re headed to Menerbes, France tomorrow. A short, easy drive, only a couple of hours.
Au revoir from France. Teddy says “Happy New Year”!
